GENERAL How were the DIRECT Method for English coursebooks created? The DME books are the collaborative work of expert teachers with over 10 years of experience in teaching English with direct methods, including the Callan Method. At first they were introduced in only two schools in Poland. After over a year of teaching from the Direct coursebooks, the current 2nd edition was written. It was the result of many analyses, as well as valuable comments from both teachers and students. Since 2008 the coursebooks have been used in over 150 schools in Poland. How do the Direct Method for English coursebooks differ from the Callan coursebooks? Lesson organisation, which focused on practical speaking, asking questions and dragging answers out of students, has been retained whereas modern vocabulary as well as more up-to-date subject areas and easy-to-understand grammar have been added. The coursebooks have a different layout. Now they are more teacher and student friendly. Unlike most English language coursebooks, they contain phonetic transcription and additional grammar lessons at the end of the coursebook. Where can I learn from the DME coursebooks? You can learn from the DME coursebooks in a language school which cooperates with Direct English Publishers. You can find the list of schools on our List of schools page. COOPERATION WITH DIRECT ENGLISH PUBLISHERS How can I begin cooperation with the Publisher? You can email direct@direct-english.eu or fill in the form on the Contact us page. We will send you an e-mail with all the necessary information within 24 hours. If necessary, we we will come to your school and give a free presentation of the coursebooks and put forward a precise offer of cooperation. After signing the contract with the Publisher you will receive the starter set and will be able to order the coursebooks. Do I have to sign a contract with the Publisher? Yes, it is necessary for a school to sign a contract with the Publisher because the school must have the starter set. What does the starter set contain? The starter set contains Student's Books 1 to 6, Teacher's Books 1 to 6, Illustration charts for Book 1 (1 item of each) and a set of additional teaching materials. Will I get other teaching aids and materials? Yes, we occasionally make additional materials available to schools cooperating with the Publisher, e.g. posters with irregular verbs or phonetic symbols, leaflets with information on the direct method and the DME coursebooks. Can I use the Direct Method for English logo? Yes, after signing the contract with the Publisher, your school will have the right to use the DME coursebooks logo as well as texts from the Publisher's official site in its publicity and information materials. Will I get your support during advertising campaigns? Each school using the DME coursebooks is advertised on the Publisher's official website. From time to time the Publisher organizes advertising campaigns together with cooperating schools - of course, taking part in the campaigns is not obligatory. Your school will also obtain a Publisher's authorised partner certificate. You will be informed about all the advertising campaigns via email. In September 2008 the Publisher, together with several schools, advertised in Google. Can my school place a link to the Publisher's site on its own site? Yes, after signing the cooperation contract, your school has the right to place the Publisher's site link on its own site. Does signing the cooperation contract mean that my school will lose its independence? No, because we are not a franchisor. Your school will remain 100% independent since the cooperation with the Publisher is limited to using its coursebooks. We advise how to use our coursebooks in the best way, answer all your questions concerning the teaching and technicalities, but we don't impose anything on you. How long does it take to introduce the coursebooks in a school? If the school uses the Callan Method it is possible to introduce the coursebooks in less than 7 days, since the organization of the lesson and of the whole course is similar. They mostly differ in one very important aspect: Direct Method for English contains modern and up-to-date vocabulary. Does a school cooperating with the Publisher get the exclusive right to use the coursebooks in the city where it operates? No, because the Publisher doesn't restrict the use of the coursebooks in a given city to only one school. It is worth noticing that systems offering exclusive rights for their products usually involve costly licence fees and demanding minimum sales limits. We are of the opinion that flexible cooperation is the best solution. PURCHASE OF THE COURSEBOOKS Is there any minimum number of books I am obliged to buy? No, schools can order as many books as they need. The cooperation contract doesn't oblige schools to make obligatory purchases. There is no minimum number of books you are obliged to buy either; so, theoretically, you can even order just one coursebook. How can I buy the DME coursebooks? First of all, you should sign a cooperation contract with the Publisher. Then, you can order the coursebooks. All the payments should be made prior to the shipment of the coursebooks. You will get the pro forma invoice via email. How to order the coursebooks? The order procedure is as follows: (1) the school emails an order to orders@direct-english.eu (2) the Publisher emails back with an invoice (3) the school transfers money to the Publisher's bank account (4) the coursebooks are sent to the school. How long does it take to complete the order? Up to 7 days, in most cases 3 days from placing the order to getting the books. How are the coursebooks delivered? The coursebooks are sent by a courier service or post. Does the Publisher accept returns? No, the Publisher doesn't accept back the books which the school hasn't sold. Can a private individual buy the coursebooks for private use? No, because the coursebooks are designed for the direct method, which doesn't work without a teacher. We recommend that you find a school using the DME coursebooks in your region on the List of schools page. Does the Publisher replace defective coursebooks? Yes, after the school returns the defective coursebooks, the Publisher will replace the defective textbooks or CDs. THE COURSEBOOKS AND TEACHING MATERIALS How many coursebooks are there? Textbooks 1 to 6 containing 12 Stages are available, from complete beginners to intermediate levels. Altogether students learn almost 4000 words. What does the coursebook contain? Each coursebook contains 2 stages, all new words accompanied by phonetic transcription, additional grammar exercises, a vocabulary index, and a CD (new words, questions and answers as well as dictations recorded in MP3 format). Are the stages compatible with the Callan Method stages? Yes, more or less, but not 100%, because the DME is a completely new coursebook. We can assume 75% compatibility, which is enough to pass e.g. from the Callan Method Stage 4 to the DME Stage 5 without difficulty. This percentage of compatibility is sufficient because, in practice, no group of students is homogenous. Very often new students, who studied from other coursebooks and used other methods, join the group. Besides, nobody knows 100% of the course material, even if they have studied using the same method from stage 1. What teaching materials can I buy from the Publisher? You can buy Student's Books 1 to 6, Teacher's Books 1 to 6, Illustration charts for Book 1, a CD presentation of the Direct Method for English. What teaching materials will I get for free? Each school receives a set of teaching materials in electronic form including a set of stage exams, a placement test, a set of illustrations for Book 1, Teacher's Handbook and others. How can I send my comments concerning the coursebooks or teaching materials? We will be glad to read any comments you may have concerning our products. The Internet platform is an e-learning programme which contains exercises corresponding to the lessons in the second edition of the DIRECT Method for English coursebooks. Students can consolidate the already learnt material, catch up if they fall behind or revise the material before a stage exam in a very attractive and modern way. What does the Internet platform contain? The Internet platform contains 100 dictations and over 500 grammatical exercises - everything directly corresponding to the lessons in the DIRECT Method for English coursebooks. Students can get up to 100 additional hours if they do all the exercises. How can I test the Internet platform? You can test the features of the Internet platform by using the demo version. Simply type in „DEMO” as your PIN. Click here to go to the login page. What should I do to use the full version of the Internet platform? If you want to use the full version of the Internet platform, your school should sign a contract for using the platform with the Publisher. Then, you will get a set of PIN numbers for each month. The PIN numbers are distributed to students learning from the DME coursebooks. How can I get the PIN to the platform, so that I can do the exercises? If your school has signed a contract for using the platform, you can get the PIN in your school's office. If your school doesn't provide its students with access to the platform, ask them why not! Does every student get their own PIN? No, the school gets a set of PIN numbers (one for each month) and gives every student the same PIN for a given month.  |
